The General Collection on Society and Culture

Central to The Nineteenth Century programme is the General Collection. It is the largest microfiche collection, representing just over half the total works microfilmed. Texts for the General Collection are selected on a number of criteria, the most important being the relevance of the literature to modern interests. The Nineteenth Century General Collection republishes thousands of scarce books and pamphlets originally published between 1801 and 1900, creating a massive resource for research in every area of human life and ideas in the nineteenth century. Comprehensive access is provided through Library of Congress subject headings.

The microfiche collection enables scholars to access scarce texts, many of which have never been listed in a published bibliography.
