Nineteenth Century Books on Publishing, the Booktrade and the Diffusion of Knowledge

This important collection brings together, for the first time, a comprehensive library of materials for the history of publishing in the nineteenth century.

The nineteenth century witnessed dramatic changes in printing techniques and publishing practice, not only in the established centres of publishing in Britain, but in British territories throughout the world. The collection therefore documents, for the benefit of a growing number of scholars interested in booktrade history, developments in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India, Burma and Malaysia, as well as in Britain. It includes texts on every aspect of the manufacture and distribution of books, magazines, newspapers, prints and maps. The rapid growth of libraries of every kind in the century was a significant development which ran parallel with the pressure for mass education, and the collection includes published catalogues, now our only source for determining shifts in taste and the distribution of popular literature.

The collection comprises over 700 texts, including:

• Andrews, Alexander, The history of British journalism from the foundation of the newspaper press in England, to the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1855, with sketches of press celebrities (London, 1859 [i.e. 1858])
• Bohn, Henry George, Observations on the plan and progress of the catalogue of the Library of the British Museum. By a bookseller (London, 1855)
• Morris, William, A note by William Morris on his aims in founding the Kelmscott Press (London, 1898)
• Pollard, Alfred William, Early illustrated books. A history of the decoration and illustration of books in the 15th and 16th centuries (London, 1893)
