Search Fields

You can search The Nineteenth Century by the following fields:

• All Record Keyword
• Title
• Author
• Collection
• Names and Subjects
• Place of Publication
• Publisher
• Year of Publication
• Microfiche Number

All Record Keyword

From the Search page, you can use the All Record Keyword field to search for any word or phrase contained within an entry in The Nineteenth Century. To enter terms into the search box:

• browse a list of keywords from which you can select terms to transfer back to the search box;
  
  or
  
  
• type your search terms directly into the All Record Keyword search box. Search terms may consist of either single words or phrases.

For example:

When searching in the All Record Keyword field, you can use truncation to retrieve records containing variations on a term. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean and proximity searching.

Title

From the Search page, you can use the Title field to search for any word or phrase contained in the title of an entry. To enter items into the search box:

• browse a list of issuing bodies from which you can select terms to transfer back to the search box. Each body and subsidiary body is indexed as a separate entry in the Title browse list;
  
  or
  
  
• type your search terms directly into the Title search box. Search terms may consist of either single words or phrases.

For example:

When searching in the Title field, you can use truncation to retrieve entries for publications with common or similar names. If you choose to search for more than one term, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Author

From the Search page, you can limit a search to a particular author. To enter terms in the Author search box:

• browse a list of inverted author names from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box;
  
  or
  
  
• type the inverted name directly into the Author search box. (Note: as the Author field often contains other distinguishing information, such as birth and death dates, it is generally advisable to use the browse list when searching by author name.)

For example:

If you choose to search for more than one Author, you can combine them using Boolean searching.

Collection

From the Search page, you can use the Collection field to locate records belonging to one or more of the Specialist Collections in The Nineteenth Century, according to one or more of the original nineteenth-century classifications of books used by the British Library. To enter terms in the Collection search box:

• browse a list of subjects from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.
  
  or
  
  
• type your required subject name directly into the Collection search box.

For example:

When searching in the Collection field, you can choose to search for more than one subject using Boolean searching.

Names and Subjects

From the Search page, you can use the Names and Subjects search field to locate records in The Nineteenth Century belonging to one or more of the Specialist Collections, according to their Library of Congress subject classifications. To enter terms in the Names and Subjects search box:

• browse a list of subject names from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.
  
  or
  

• type your subject name(s) directly into the Names and Subjects search box.

For example:

If you choose to search for more than one Subject, you can also combine them using Boolean searching.

Place of Publication

From the Search page, you can search by place of publication for all relevant publications listed in The Nineteenth Century. To enter terms in the Place of Publication search box:

• browse a list of places of publication from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.
  
  or
  
  
• type directly into the Place of Publication search box.

For example:

If you choose to search for more than one place of publication, you can combine them using Boolean searching.

Publisher

From the Search page, you can search for works published by a particular publisher. To enter terms in the Publisher search box:

• browse a list of publishers from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.
  
  or
  
  
• type your publisher keyword(s) directly into the Publisher search box.

For example:

When searching in the Publisher field, you can use truncation to retrieve entries for publishers with common or similar names. You can also combine keywords in the Publisher field using Boolean searching.

Year of Publication

Use the Year of Publication field to limit a search to works published during a specific year or range of years. The default values appearing in the search boxes represent the earliest and most recent years covered by the database.

The Year of Publication field can be searched in two ways:

• To search on a range of years, enter the relevant values into the from and to search boxes.
  
  

  For example:

  
  
• To search on one particular year, enter the same value into both of the search boxes.
  

Microfiche Number

From the Search page, you can search for records using the number assigned to the microfiche edition of the work in The Nineteenth Century programme.

To enter terms in the Microfiche Number search box:

• browse a list of microfiche numbers from which you can select items to transfer back to the search box.
  
  or
  
  
• type the number directly into the Microfiche Number search box.

For example:

When searching in the Microfiche Number field, you can combine terms using Boolean searching.
